Everything but the kitchen sink!

What have we been up to? Well … everything but the kitchen sink. But not to worry, we’re getting to that. Check out some of the bicycles we’ve recently built. The website will be updated with more images of recent builds.

Also, our Apple-Daisy bicycle is now for sale. Go have a look here for details.

We’re also busy with a few limited edition Starling & Hero racers. They’ll be up on the website as soon as they are completed.

Thanks to everybody that’s been supporting us at the Neighbourgoods Market on Saturdays. It seems we will finally be moving into our popup space at the Woodstock Industrial Centre from next week. (Update, 7 June: No more pop-up space. Sorry everybody! We’ll be moving directly into our designated space soon.) Wish we had one of these Brooks seesaws outside the shop …

Oh yeah, more [colourful] Brooks leather goods on the way.

And remember about the next Moonlight Mass on 4 June. There is is Puma FUNK bicycle being given away. Please check out the Moonlight Mass website for details and follow them on Twitter for updates (@moonlightmass).

Now, let’s go ride!

Bring/keep up to speed

Okay, so we made it to Cape Town and we are digging it. Been super busy with website updates and organising a bunch of stuff. Go check out the goods section for some new things and some more coming soon.

Due to some unforeseen problems (a Plate that is not as Golden as it claims to be), our shop will be opening at a temporary space soon. It will pretty much be a pop-up shop for a month or two. Some mixed feelings about this (see the dudes below), but it’s still gonna most awesome. Details within the week.

In the meantime, please remember about Critical Mass on 30 March and Moonlight Mass on 5 April. Please check out CT Bicycle Commuter for details.

Happy cruising!

The Slow Bicycle Movement

Taken from the Jorg & Olif website, a declaration that we at Starling & Hero passionately champion.

At its heart is a keen desire to enjoy the journey, to take in the sights and to think about the whole wonderful process that is cycling.”

Here’s a sample of their manifesto

  • Please ride the bike you have, in the clothes you like, at the speed you enjoy.
  • Our bicycles give us the freedom of the city and the keys to the country.
  • Hills and/or gradients may be walked.
  • The recommended posture for slow bicycling is upright, straight-backed. Just like your mother taught you.
  • The average speed of cyclists in Copenhagen is 15 km/h. This is the maximum speed for the Movement. (Unless going downhill and shouting Wheeeeeee!)
  • Membership is contagious. Spread the slow word in low, sultry tones.

Cape Town … here we come!

Okay, so we are closing today until the 1st of 1 March for the big move to Cape Town. During this time we will not be taking any new orders. We will also be preparing the store for the grand opening. More details to follow.

Let’s go!

Yet again we ride into the new year and we have few new things to start it off with.

We have updated the Upcycles page, as well as the Goods section.

Please be sure to have a look at the Goods section for some of the super cool products we offer. Knog locks & lights, Brooks saddles, Chapel bags as well as our very own bicycle tool roll made exclusively by godspede for Starling & Hero.

The updated catalogue is also back online and can be viewed directly on the site here. The order form can be found on that same page; just follow the instructions to place your upcycle order.

For any orders from the Goods section please .

We have also been given a super awesome opportunity, that we simply cannot let slip through our grease covered fingers. Unfortunately, this will delay the opening of our shop in Cape Town with a few months. Details to follow as soon as we confirmed a few things.

So yeah … let’s go!

Happy new year!

The giveaway includes a very cool Knog Party Frank lock sponsored by us. You can also see more photos here. Angie is choosing a winner this Friday. So go on then!

But can she draw?

The answer is … heck yes! Her name is Bianca and she loves cupcakes. We asked Bianca to illustrate the postcards we send out after each Upcycle order has been completed. These illustrations are absolutely awesome! We’ve always told her that (but she doesn’t seem to believe us). To view a bit more of Bianca’s work please go to her Behance page. You can contact Bianca at [email protected] for freelance or permanent work.

These illustrations (without the name on the front) are also available for purchase @ R350 each (includes postage in a cardboard tube). Each illustration is limited to an edition of 5, printed on A3 Cyclus Offset paper. Please contact us for list of available options and to order.
